Circular construction event highlights policy and innovation for a sustainable future

Industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators from across Europe gathered at Serbia, Belgrade for the event, "Advancing the circular economy within the construction sector: challenges and opportunities,” to discuss the future of sustainable construction. The event focused on the critical role that circular models in the construction sector can play in reducing carbon emissions, preserving resources, and advancing the European Union’s Green Deal objectives.

The event was part of the World Green Building Week 2024 National Conference and started with a session on policy priorities for circular construction. This panel brought together experts to discuss how European and global policies are shaping the transition to circular construction. Speakers included Lucie Blondel, Policy Officer for Circular Cities and Regions Initiatives at the European Commission, and Philippe Moseley, Team Leader for Sustainable Construction at the European Commission.

Then started the session “New technologies and European Innovations for digitalised and environmentally-friendly construction”. This panel focused on three European Commission-funded projects that are leading the way in circular construction: Circ-Boost, presented by Albert De La Fuente Antequera;  RECONSTRUCT , presented by Jose Lucas; and WOODCIRCLES, presented by Anders Kjellow. These projects are developing platforms and tools that incorporate eco-friendly materials, enable efficient recycling and recovery of construction materials, and harness digital technologies to drive circular construction solutions.

The event concluded with a panel discussing the impact of European circular economy solutions on local realities across the continent. Panelists included project pilot managers, such as Laura Ribotta from the Municipality of Turin.

“Knowledge sharing is key to innovation. WOODCIRCLES are happy to participate in the World Green Building Week to contribute to advancing circular economy within the construction sector”, said Woodcircles Coordinator Anders Kjellow from the Danish Technological Institute.
