Woodcircles brings art and sustainability together

At this year’s Paratissima, the contemporary art fair in Turin, Woodcircles engaged audiences with a thought-provoking installation and hands-on workshop that fused art with social impact.

The collaborative installation, shaped through weeks of ideation and design, reflected Woodcircles’ commitment to sustainability and circular economy principles. After the event, the installation was dismantled and the material will be transformed into furniture (bench and chairs) for a local school, demonstrating how wood can be repurposed and art reimagined to benefit communities.

Beyond the installation, Woodcircles also organized a workshop, led by the City of Turin in partnership with Ipercollettivo, the Istituto d’Arte Applicata e Design, and Gruppo Iren. Students participated in this co-design and co-construction process, named “La Svolta”, transforming wooden pallets salvaged from social housing renovation. This workshop exemplifies Woodcircles’ approach to participatory co-design and stakeholder engagement, fostering collaboration among relevant stakeholders.

These activities are part of Woodcircles’ city-specific experimentations, including sorting and processing wood waste from refurbishments, creating new urban furniture elements, and integrating these solutions into the workflows of European partner cities.

As the capital of Italy’s Piedmont region, Turin is a hub of innovation and actively promotes sustainable and inclusive policies to support its ecological transition. The 20th edition of Paratissima, held at the SNOS Offices on Corso Mortara, welcomed over 20,000 visitors. Organized by the Comune di Torino during Turin’s Art Week, the event showcased over 350 emerging artists, featuring visual and digital art, live talks, and performances, reinforcing its reputation as a vibrant cultural highlight.
