The Woodcirlces Travelling Demonstrator opens its European journey at the Estonian National Museum

The Woodcircles Travelling Demonstrator has arrived in Tartu, Estonia, marking the first stop of its journey across Europe. Installed in front of the Estonian National Museum (ERM), the full-scale wooden structure brings the principles of circular construction to life and invites visitors to explore how buildings can be designed for reuse rather than demolition. The launch marks an important milestone for the project, bringing years of research, collaboration and innovation into a tangible experience that demonstrates how circular approaches can transform the future of timber construction.

On 21 August, the Woodcircles Travelling Demonstrator is being assembled in Tartu, where it will remain on display until the end of September. Tartu is the first city to host the demonstrator before it continues its journey to Turin and Rotterdam, eventually reaching its permanent home at the Danish Technological Institute in Denmark.

The demonstrator translates the research and solutions developed within Woodcircles into a tangible, full-scale structure. Built from modular wooden components, it is designed to be assembled, disassembled and reconfigured multiple times.

Rather than seeing a building as something that eventually becomes waste, the demonstrator illustrates a different approach: buildings can become material banks, preserving the value of their components and allowing them to be recovered and reused in future applications.

Bringing circular construction into the real world

The construction sector is responsible for a significant share of global resource consumption, waste generation and greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing these challenges requires not only new materials, but also a fundamental rethink of how buildings are designed, constructed, used and eventually transformed.

Woodcircles is exploring how timber construction can contribute to this transition. The project investigates solutions ranging from the reuse of existing wood to new design approaches that make future buildings easier to adapt, disassemble and rebuild.

The Travelling Demonstrator brings many of these ideas together in one physical structure. Visitors can see how modularity, design for disassembly, material reuse and circular thinking can become part of a real construction system.

Its journey across Europe is also an experiment in itself. At every stop, the same components are dismantled, transported and assembled again, demonstrating that building elements can retain their value and function across different uses and locations.

Tartu: the first stop of a European journey

As the first host city, Tartu plays a special role in launching the demonstrator’s European journey.

The installation in front of the Estonian National Museum creates an opportunity for residents, professionals and visitors to encounter circular construction outside the laboratory or construction site and experience its principles at full scale.

After its stay in Tartu, the demonstrator will travel to Turin, Italy, followed by Rotterdam, the Netherlands. At each destination, the structure will provide a platform for sharing knowledge, engaging local communities and discussing how circular approaches to timber construction can respond to different European contexts.

Following the travelling phase, the demonstrator will be permanently installed at the Danish Technological Institute in Denmark, coordinator of the Woodcircles project.

Celebrating the demonstrator with the Tartu community

The arrival of the demonstrator will also be celebrated with a free family day on 23 August, from 11:00 to 15:00, organised by the City of Tartu and Eesti Rahva Kolahoov.

Visitors will first be able to explore the Woodcircles installation before taking part in hands-on activities nearby. A woodworking workshop will give participants the opportunity to build something themselves, either independently or with guidance.

Thanks to materials provided by Woodcircles partner Stora Enso, the wood needed for the activities will be available on site. The programme will also include additional activities and food.

Participation is free and no advance registration is required.

From research to something you can see, touch and rebuild

The Woodcircles Travelling Demonstrator is more than an exhibition. It is a practical example of the project’s vision for a more circular built environment, where materials remain valuable for longer and buildings are designed with their next life in mind.

By taking this structure from Tartu to Turin, Rotterdam and ultimately Denmark, Woodcircles will demonstrate one of the fundamental ideas behind circular construction: the end of one use does not have to mean the end of a building component. It can be the beginning of the next one.

The Woodcircles project brings together 19 partners from across Europe and is coordinated by the Danish Technological Institute. The project is funded by the European Union.
