The Woodcircles Travelling Demonstrator begins its journey

A new chapter is about to begin for Woodcircles. After months of planning, design, coordination and collaboration across the project, the Woodcircles Travelling Demonstrator is getting ready to start its journey across Europe.

More than an exhibition, the Woodcircles Travelling Demonstrator is a physical expression of what circular construction can become. It brings together materials, stories, research results and practical solutions to show how wood can be reused, reimagined and reintegrated into the built environment in smarter and more sustainable ways.

At its core, the Woodcircles Travelling Demonstrator is designed as a small timber structure that visitors can enter, explore and experience. It is not only something to look at, but a space to walk through and engage with. Its design will highlight the principles that guide the Woodcircles project: circular use of wood, better material recovery, design for disassembly, reuse of construction elements, and the creation of new value chains around secondary timber.

The structure will combine physical materials, informative panels, digital content and storytelling elements. Visitors will be guided through the journey of wood, from its first use in buildings to its possible second life in new construction applications. They will discover how timber elements can be recovered from demolition or renovation processes, how their quality and potential can be assessed, and how innovative approaches can help extend their value instead of turning them into waste.

The Woodcircles Travelling Demonstrator is also a way to make the circular economy more visible and tangible. Circular construction is often discussed through strategies, technical documents and policy ambitions. The demonstrator brings these ideas into a real and accessible format. It shows that circularity is not an abstract concept, but something that can be designed, built, touched and understood.

Its journey will begin in Tartu, Estonia, where the demonstrator will be presented as the first stop of a wider European route. From there, it will continue to other locations, including Turin and Rotterdam, adapting its story to each local context while keeping a common message: the future of construction must make better use of the materials we already have.

Tartu – Estonian National Museum

Each stop will offer an opportunity to connect with local communities, professionals, researchers, students, city representatives and citizens. The demonstrator will act as a meeting point for dialogue around circular building practices and the role that cities, companies and people can play in supporting this transition.

Torino – Oval

A key feature of the Travelling Demonstrator is its layered storytelling. Some elements will remain constant throughout the journey, presenting the overall Woodcircles vision and the main principles of circular timber construction. Other elements will evolve from city to city, giving space to local examples, events and contributions from the project partners.

Rotterdam – HER Center

The relevance of the demonstrator lies in its ability to connect research with real-world understanding. Woodcircles is developing knowledge, tools and solutions to improve how wood is used and reused in construction. The Woodcircles travelling Demonstrator transforms this work into a shared experience. It helps communicate why circularity matters, how it can be implemented, and what challenges still need to be addressed.

The Woodcirlces Travelling Demonstrator opens its European journey at the Estonian National Museum

The Woodcircles Travelling Demonstrator has arrived in Tartu, Estonia, marking the first stop of its journey across Europe. Installed in front of the Estonian National Museum (ERM), the full-scale wooden structure brings the principles of circular construction to life and invites visitors to explore how buildings can be designed for reuse rather than demolition. The launch marks an important milestone for the project, bringing years of research, collaboration and innovation into a tangible experience that demonstrates how circular approaches can transform the future of timber construction.
